Frequently Asked Questions

What is 4id ?

4id stands for 4chan image database, a webapp to store images and videos with the help of tags and folders.

What is its purpose ? Why store images like that ?

When you save images on your computer, they can only be in one folder at a time. This is problematic when you have some that could go in more than one place (ex. funny and political). Thanks to tags and folders, you can organize them as you see fit in a meaningful structure that's quick to browse. The Internet holds vast amounts of information, some of which can be of interest. It is infeasible to collect and organize all such pictures on your own. With 4id, this task can be accomplished collectively over time thus solving the initial problem.

Are there forbidden categories ?

Yes, the following are strictly forbidden and matching images will be removed without prior notice:

  • Pornography of any kind
  • Advertisement of any kind
  • Malformed and/or maliciously crafted payloads embedded into content (ex. shellcode)
  • Personally identifiable information (PII)
  • Copyrighted material not permitted under, notably, fair use doctrine or any other similar limitation and exception of exclusive right granted by copyright
  • Any content that is illegal in your country of residence or Switzerland

You can report such content directly from its page (use the yellow flag button ). Your IP address may be banned for (repeatedly) submitting such content.

What kind of file types are supported ?

The following are accepted: jpg jpeg mp4 png gif bmp webp webm

Is metadata kept on uploaded files ?

No, EXIF and XMP data is wiped for all images.

What kind of features are there ?

While 4id receives continuous enhancement (see here for a list of current tasks), current features include:

Some of the planned features are:

How does it work ?

You begin by uploading images, with optional title & description, and tags & folders which indicate relationships with other entities. You can also create a folder in advance so that it's available to organize future uploads, with optional nesting. Tags are created on the spot if they don't already exist, otherwise they are simply modified in-place to hold new images.

After this initial adding phase, you can search for content (see navbar) or browse through images, videos, tags, and folders.

What's the difference between tags and folders ?

Tag Folder
Best use case Labelling content Organizing collections of images
Creation During upload In advance
Additional info No Description
Limitations Name: 30 characters Title: 100 characters
ID Name Random
Nesting No Yes, infinitely + tree view
Editable No Yes
Edit history No Yes, reversible
API access Search + JSON export

Can I specify associated data for images ?

Yes, the following fields are available:

  • Source: reference to where the content originates from, can be prefixed
  • Location: geographical reference for the content, can be prefixed
  • License: any license(s) under which the content was releases
  • Date/time: when the original content was produced

You are encouraged to use prefixes as such to include context:

  • Source
    • ISBN: isbn: (ex: isbn:978-3-540-28632-5)
    • DOI: doi: (ex: doi:10.1007/978-3-031-30872-7_1)
    • URL: url: (ex: url:https://eprint.iacr.org/2023/331)
  • Location
    • Geo: geo: (ex: geo:47.21040,7.78713)
    • Address: addr: (ex: addr:Lotzwilstrasse 6, 4900 Langenthal)
This helps provide links to external srevices, such as OpenStreetMap and DOI.

Are there general rules ?

Yes, in no specific order:

  • No flooding or spamming of any kind
  • Don't post content that is bogus, irrelevant, indecipherable, gibberish, for instance in an attempt to dilute the site quality
  • No filing false or overly incorrect reports
  • Don't impersonate a 4id staff member
  • Posting content that is illegal in your country of residence or Switzerland

Your IP address may be banned for (repeatedly) infringing them, you reap what you sow. Please note they may be updated at any time without prior notice, so check back regularly.

Are there rate limits ?

Yes, uploading an image and creating folders are limited as such: 6/minute.

Can I use it on something else than a desktop computer ?

Yes, but priority is given to provide a good user experience on that platform before others.

Is 4id always available ?

Based on a best-effort scheme, there are no guarantees with respect to the availability and quality of the service. However, efforts are made to have a good uptime. Occasional maintenance tasks may be carried out with a (likely) prior notice to ensure smooth operations, while outages can happen at any time without advance warnings.

In some cases, 4id may be put in 'read-only' mode where it is impossible to add or modify content, for instance to deter 'raids' or in case of backend maintenance.

Does 4id check the users' content for veracity/fakeness ?

No, the goal of 4id is to help store images in a meaningful structure, free of hassle, no more no less. Ensuring that some content hosted on 4id is on par with standard(s) you deem important is up to you.

I made a mistake when uploading an image/creating a folder, what can I do ?

After submitting content, you will have 60 minutes to delete it from 4id using the trash button directly from the content's page. Afterwards, resort to options listed in the next question.

Please note that this only works if you are the original poster.

Something isn't right with an image/folder (wrong tag, bad folder, etc), what can I do ?

If you think changes should be made, use the modification form .

If you think it should removed, report it (see above).

Is the source code available ?

Yes, it's here and licensed with AGPL-3.0+NIGGER.

Can I contribute to 4id's development ?

Yes, make sure you have an account on the GitLab server so that you can submit code and other inputs.

Can 4id be used without JavaScript ?

Yes, but some QoL features won't work, such as modals and dropdown menus (list not exhaustive).

Is it possible to access 4id's data programatically ?

Yes, there are multiple API endpoints. See this page for more information.

Where is all this data kept ? For how long ?

Somewhere in Switzerland, indefinitely unless stated otherwise. For more details, see the Legal information.

Are there regular backups or exports to preserve all of 4id's data ?

Yes, the last 7 days' data is available here. It will help circumvent censorship or seizure of any kind, for instance by having mirror instances hosted somewhere else.

I can't find an answer to my question, who can I talk to ?

Send a mail to gopfertaminomal at theswissbay.ch with mandatory '4id inquiry' as Subject.
